WNBA Finals Game 7 discussion: What will determine if the Golden State Valkyries or Atlanta Dream become first-time champions?

It, however, will be the 14th time that the WNBA's championship series has gone the distance.

And in 11 of previous 13 times, the home team has come out on top, from the first single-elimination title game in 1997, when the Houston Comets defeated the New York Liberty, to two seasons ago, when the Liberty won a tightly-contested Game 5 to take their long-awaited first championship over the Minnesota Lynx.

The Lynx are one of the two franchises to lose a championship game on their home floor. A decade ago, the Los Angeles Sparks captured the 2016 championship by winning Game 5 in Minneapolis. The only other time a visitor took the title in a decisive game was in 2007, when the Phoenix Mercury won Game 5 over the Detroit Shock.

Historical precedent thus suggests the Valkyries hold a demonstrable advantage, and that history doesn't account for the power of Ballhalla, where, in just two seasons, the Chase Center has become one of the most passionate home courts in American pro sports. ( Zack Ward also discussed the historical roots of Golden State's homecourt advantage). On top of that, it will be Halloween night, and Golden State is led by a star who loves the spooky holiday.

History, however, should not haunt the Dream.

This is the first Game 7 in league history, and on Halloween night, tricks and treats might supplant trends. After storming out in State Farm Arena in Game 6 to guarantee that there would be a Game 7, the Dream can return to Ballhalla, where they've already taken one game, for one final visit—and exit as victors.

Those are the longterm trends that give context for Game 7. What about the in-series ones? Based on the six games played so far, what are the championship-winning conditions for Golden State and Atlanta?

Although reductive, schemes, strategies, adjustments, counters and other bits of cleverness are unlikely to determine the outcome.

Among the Four Factors (identified by basketball analyst Dean Oliver as the stats determinative to winning: effective field goal percentage, turnover percentage, rebounding percentage and free throw rate), the first one, shooting, has been most correlated with the winner, with the victorious team shooting better in five of the six games.

Game 2 is the outlier. When Atlanta won in Golden State by 14 points, the Valkyries shot barely better than the Dream (40.2 effective field goal percentage to 39.5 effective field goal percentage). Atlanta was advantaged by the highest free throw rate of any game in this series at 48.4 percent.

That, unfortunately, suggests how the game is called might be secondary to shooting in swinging the outcome of Game 7. And on Halloween, there's nothing scarier for Golden State and Atlanta fans than knowing the whistles of WNBA refs might determine which team wins the championship.

Ideally, historical patterns, shooting variance or referee subjectivities won't be what decides the 2026 WNBA champion.

Basketball, more than any other sport, is about stars, where the excellence of an individual can overcome all else to achieve the ultimate.

So, who steps up? Which star will grab the Game 7 stage and steer her team to the first-ever title?

Will Gabby Williams substantiate Golden State owner Joe Lacob's "best player in the world" proclamation? Is it Rhyne Howard's moment to turn all her potential into a title-winning performance? Will Veronica Burton, once again, come through in the clutch? Will Angel Reese refuse to allow anyone to deny to her championship Dream? ( Edwin Garcia went deeper on Angel's championship drive.)

Or will the hero be Kiah Stokes, Allisha Gray, Tiffany Hayes or Jordin Canada?
